As of 2019, the Wheel Tax process for unincorporated Cook County residents is now stickerless. Instead of purchasing a physical sticker to be adhered to vehicle windshields as required in previous years, residents will now simply remit their wheel tax payment using their Renewal Wheel Tax Liability Notification. Payment will be accepted online, by mail, in-person at the Department of Revenue and at over 100 ELS (currency exchanged/retail payment processing) locations. Payment can no longer be made at township offices.
In addition to removing the need for physical sticker, residents who qualify as a Senior Citizen or certain No Fee Exemption classifications will not be required to register or remit a tax payment as of July 1, 2019. The new process allows for proration in the event a vehicle is purchased or relocated to an unincorporated area between January 1st and June 30th.
The Cook County Wheel Tax will continue to be valid from July 1st through June 30th of the following year. As such, unincorporated residents should be sure to make their 2019/2020 wheel tax payment on or before July 1, 2019 to avoid fines or citations.
